Searun Fish

Because searun fish travel between the ocean and freshwater in large numbers at particular times of the year, they are often among the most important species in the annual harvest calendar of coastal cultures.

Searun fish are those fish species that are born in freshwater, but then migrate to sea, where they spend most of their lives, and only return to freshwater to spawn, often exactly where they were born. Searun fish are represented by various families, from large sturgeon, salmon and char to small searun smelt.
